30-year Art and Creative Director for San Francisco ad agencies

I’ve never taken money from anybody before in my life. I’ve never been
in a position where I couldn’t pay my mortgage, with my back up against
the wall, as I’ve been the last few years. Even in college I never took
money from my family. It’s a big deal to have to go through this.

I was a creative director until 2000, when my wife died of cancer. I hadn’t
had a break in 30 years, so I decided to sell a second home and take off
the year to be with her and my daughter, who was 9.

I wanted to ease back into the business by freelancing so I could still
be home with my daughter. But lo and behold, the ad business totally fell
apart in the Bay Area because of the dot-com bubble. It’s been the worst
I’ve seen it and I’ve been here since the mid-70s. By 2003, my money was
gone and my feet were to the fire. I also hit the grand old age of 50, which
seemed to draw a line in the sand for getting jobs.

A friend came along and said, “I need my house painted, do you want to do
that?” so I did. I’ve been painting houses for the last two years. But it’s
not full-time and it brings in one-quarter the hourly income I can get for
freelance Creative Director consulting, so it doesn’t cover everything.
I’ve got a huge amount of debt.

I’ve been on the phone a lot networking, calling past contacts. I called
one friend who I hadn’t spoken to in awhile and she said, “Have you heard
about BAARC?” I hadn’t. They really helped me out big time, paying bills
like PG&E and my mortgage. I’ve nearly had my electricity cut off, my phone
shut off, and my health insurance canceled.

If it wasn’t for them, I would have had to sell my house and leave the Bay
Area. If I had sold, I would never have been able to afford another house
here, and I would be living in an apartment paying the same amount as my
      mortgage.

It’s very challenging to ask for help. You have to eat your pride. My daughter
is going to start high school and I don’t want to pull her out of it. There
is also a lot of anger about this business. I’ve given it 30 years of my
life. Because I’m not 20 years old, pierced left, right, and center, and
don’t know every software program on the planet, my 30 years of experience
      isn’t worth a damn.

My father, who lives overseas, had a scare in a hospital. My relatives paid
for us to go for a couple of weeks, otherwise we couldn’t have gone. We
manage to squeeze things out here and there. I’ve painted practically every
single day lately and with BAARC’s help, I’ve been able to get through.

My case worker is very nice, very understanding, a good ear. This business
is rife with holier-than-thou attitude, but there was none of that. The
BAARC people are very genuine, very positive, very supportive. The office
staff helped expedite the paperwork and the process so I was receiving support
within a few weeks of applying. I also got a freelance Creative Director
job through a BAARC board member.

When they accepted my application, I felt a lot of relief. I guess the other
emotion was shock at how much they were willing to help. They’ve given me
and my family thousands of dollars. I didn’t think anyone in the ad industry
gave a hoot, but my experience with BAARC was reaffirming.

It makes you feel great—you know you’re not alone. Once you get over your
hesitation, you go, “Wow! This is an issue that is nothing to be ashamed
of. There are a lot of other people going through this.”

Flora, an 82-year-old Alzheimers patient, who sold radio and print media
    for 20 years

About five years ago my mother started getting lost near her house and
was diagnosed with Alzheimers. My three sisters and I have been paying for
her medication, which is $1,000 a month, and her Alzheimers facility, which
is $3,200 a month, and we needed help.

I’m in media, too, and I used to go to the BAARC Bash; a BAARC founder was
once my boss. I thought it was a wonderful organization, but I never thought
of it in terms of myself and my family. Then I was telling a friend of mine
on the board about my expenses and she said, “Your mother was in the media,
      why don’t you contact BAARC?”

Soon after I called, a BAARC volunteer set up a meeting. We met in a little
café with our paperwork. The application is quite detailed, but he was very
specific. He told me exactly what to do and made it so simple.

It felt great. It was wonderful. He had very sage advice.

A few days later, the board accepted the application. It became effective
the next month, so the timing was great, maybe six or seven weeks before
      the benefits kicked in.

My family and my sisters have definitely scaled back to support my mom.
It’s added a frugal element to our lifestyles. My oldest sister in Alabama
had not been working and she got a job in a dress shop to cover her share
      of Mom’s expenses.

I was thrilled when they accepted our application. All of a sudden from
out of nowhere this grant happens. My sisters were so appreciative. They
couldn’t believe that just because Mom was in advertising, she was able
to get this nice grant to live in this nice facility instead of a really
      dreadful hospital.

The BAARC office staff are great. They really, really make it so user-friendly.
They know the person calling is having a hard time, so they’re very compassionate.

An Account Executive in radio ad sales

I got laid off from my job at a big broadcast firm in January, 2004. I’d
been working for 15 years in media and decided to use this break in order
to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to be closer
to my family, so I thought, “Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.”

I moved to New York and a month later I got into a really bad car accident
that fractured two bones in my lower back. It was scary—I couldn’t walk
and needed a lot of rehabilitation. My unemployment was running out by then
and I applied for disability, but it took a really long time to come.

I had known someone in San Francisco who had an aneurism and got help from
BAARC, so I called BAARC from the hospital. Soon I got a call from my volunteer
caseworker and we got going on the paperwork.

They made things very easy. My caseworker was really wonderful. She called
me with questions and I would fax her my reply. We stayed in close touch.

When BAARC said they would help out, I was very, very elated. I was living
with my sister and they helped me pay my share of the rent. BAARC was also
a lifesaver in helping me pay for acupuncture treatment. It was the only
thing that helped with the pain.

The only savings I had, I spent on physical therapy. Basically my sister
is supporting me. I’m now living in what was her husband’s office in their
apartment. He was laid off from his job recently, so it’s difficult.

You don’t want to depend on people, you want to be self-sufficient. My parents
have passed away and my sister was dealing with her kids and stuff. Now
she has another burden, which is me.

Advertising is a dog-eat-dog industry and the way I was terminated was really
unfair. So I was kind of surprised when BAARC said they would help me out.
The best thing about my BAARC experience is dealing with my caseworker.
She’s always so upbeat, so concerned about how I am doing. I found her to
be very genuine. It’s not even so much the money— although that was really
important—but the caring and extra steps she took to figure out what she
      could do for me.

I’m very grateful to BAARC. They’re not helping me financially right now.
But I’m looking for work and BAARC has someone lined up to help me with
      my resume.

As you read this, someone in the Bay Area is being helped by BAARC. The

And although we have established a few basic parameters for receiving a BAARC

The Bay Area Advertising Relief Committee (BAARC) began in 1984 with one
man named Wally Brazeal and four friends who came to his aid when he needed
them most. Upon hearing news of Wally’s illness and his exorbitant medical
expenses, those four friends decided it was time the ad industry took care
of its own. And so they formed BAARC.

Wally Brazeal had spent his career in the Bay Area as a broadcast sales
rep and had made many good friends in the business. When the ad community
heard of his need, support was immediate. A Board of Directors was formed
and soon a fundraising effort was underway. Unfortunately, during the planning
stages of the event, Wally’s wife, his primary caretaker, died unexpectedly.

This prompted even stronger resolve on the part of Wally’s friends. They
called upon our media community, who generously responded by advertising
and promoting the fundraising event. Although they were rewarded with an
overwhelming turnout, sadly that very evening, Wally Brazeal passed away.

Continuing today with the same spirit of generosity and concern, BAARC
is more prepared than ever to help members of the advertising and marketing community.
BAARC volunteers have made a concerted effort to generate annual personal
and corporate donations from all of the local communities. An even bigger
challenge for us is to get word out to the people who could use BAARC’s
services the most.

If you know of anyone in need, please let them know that BAARC is here
to help.
