30-year Art and Creative Director for San Francisco ad agencies

I’ve never taken money from anybody before in my life. I’ve never been
in a position where I couldn’t pay my mortgage, with my back up against
the wall, as I’ve been the last few years. Even in college I never took
money from my family. It’s a big deal to have to go through this.

I was a creative director until 2000, when my wife died of cancer. I hadn’t
had a break in 30 years, so I decided to sell a second home and take off
the year to be with her and my daughter, who was 9.

Flora, an 82-year-old Alzheimers patient, who sold radio and print media
    for 20 years

About five years ago my mother started getting lost near her house and
was diagnosed with Alzheimers. My three sisters and I have been paying for
her medication, which is $1,000 a month, and her Alzheimers facility, which
is $3,200 a month, and we needed help.

I’m in media, too, and I used to go to the BAARC Bash; a BAARC founder was
once my boss. I thought it was a wonderful organization, but I never thought
of it in terms of myself and my family. Then I was telling a friend of mine
on the board about my expenses and she said, “Your mother was in the media,
      why don’t you contact BAARC?”

JOLIE

An Account Executive in radio ad sales

I got laid off from my job at a big broadcast firm in January, 2004. I’d
been working for 15 years in media and decided to use this break in order
to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to be closer
to my family, so I thought, “Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.”

I moved to New York and a month later I got into a really bad car accident
that fractured two bones in my lower back. It was scary—I couldn’t walk
and needed a lot of rehabilitation. My unemployment was running out by then
and I applied for disability, but it took a really long time to come.

I had known someone in San Francisco who had an aneurism and got help from
BAARC, so I called BAARC from the hospital. Soon I got a call from my volunteer
caseworker and we got going on the paperwork.

RECEIVING A BAARC GRANT

As you read this, someone in the Bay Area is being helped by BAARC. The
organization was started with you in mind, and our safety net extends to all
areas of the industry: advertising, promotions, and media agencies, media sales
representatives, public relations firms, industry vendors, corporate marketers,
					and freelancers.

And although we have established a few basic parameters for receiving a BAARC
Grant, every application for financial assistance will be considered on a
case-by-case basis. The Grants Committee and the Board of Directors consider
each application individually, with the Board making the final decision.

Even if your situation doesn’t fall neatly in line with our guidelines, we
encourage you to contact us. At the very least, we can provide you with
					information about other resources.

HISTORY OF BAARC

The Bay Area Advertising Relief Committee (BAARC) began in 1984 with one
man named Wally Brazeal and four friends who came to his aid when he needed
them most. Upon hearing news of Wally’s illness and his exorbitant medical
expenses, those four friends decided it was time the ad industry took care
of its own. And so they formed BAARC.

Wally Brazeal had spent his career in the Bay Area as a broadcast sales
rep and had made many good friends in the business. When the ad community
heard of his need, support was immediate. A Board of Directors was formed
and soon a fundraising effort was underway. Unfortunately, during the planning
stages of the event, Wally’s wife, his primary caretaker, died unexpectedly.

This prompted even stronger resolve on the part of Wally’s friends. They
called upon our media community, who generously responded by advertising
and promoting the fundraising event. Although they were rewarded with an
overwhelming turnout, sadly that very evening, Wally Brazeal passed away.

Continuing today with the same spirit of generosity and concern, BAARC
is more prepared than ever to help members of the advertising and marketing community.
BAARC volunteers have made a concerted effort to generate annual personal
and corporate donations from all of the local communities. An even bigger
challenge for us is to get word out to the people who could use BAARC’s
services the most.

If you know of anyone in need, please let them know that BAARC is here
to help.
