By Patty Clark, (Copywriter / Content Associate)

In a candlelit basement bar in downtown San Francisco, board members and former mentors gathered for BAARC’s first meeting of the year. This meeting was a time to reflect back on the challenges and triumphs of 2014, and set new goals for the year ahead.

The Future of Leadership Traits: Are they inherently feminine?

By Heidi Kraft, BAARC Board Member

Why is a man lecturing a roomful of women about feminine leadership traits?

I was at the 3% Conference: in San Francisco, a diversity gathering named for the dismal fact that only three percent of creative directors in advertising are women—though woman are estimated to control roughly 80 percent of household spending—and I couldn’t help but feel resistant to what I was sure was to be an old-paradigm “toughen up, ladies” motivational speech.

This Holiday Season: Don’t Worry, Be Grateful

Did you know?

Whether you’re on the giving or receiving end of a gift, that gift can elicit feelings of gratitude. And research has found that gratitude is integral to happiness, health, and social bonds. Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough, co-directors of the Research Project on Gratitude and Thankfulness, found that teaching college students to “count their blessings” and cultivate gratitude caused them to exercise more, be more optimistic, and feel better about their lives overall.—UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center

Why I Volunteer with BAARC

By Nicole Moreno

For the last two years I have had the privilege to sit on the Board of Directors for the Bay Area Advertising Relief Committee. As a young professional in the nonprofit sector, I have built my career on helping underserved communities.

BAARC has given me opportunity to serve another community: the marketing community of San Francisco. A community that most of my friends and I are a part of. Now, you may wonder, why does such a community need help? Well, because life throws everyone curve balls. BAARC & AD2SF Partner for Young Professionals’ Mentor Program; First Meeting September 18th

For many years, BAARC’s Mentor Program has been a guiding force in our industry — matching mentees with a few years’ of experience with professionals with 10+ years of wisdom to share. The next session will start in mid-September, but it’s never too late to apply.

Because the program was so successful, we saw a need to create another Mentor Program — this one focused on helping recent college graduates find their way, with the role of mentor played by young professionals with a few years’ under their belt. This new program kicks off this September, with its first meeting on September 18th, at the San Francisco Main Public Library at 6:00pm. The topic of the first meeting will be Personal Branding.

Anyone interested in joining the Young Mentor Program, is encouraged to apply here.
